What is important is not because you were told to do so, but for what purpose you are developing AI, what problems you are developing AI to solve, and if you don't have that purpose, it will not work. To be able to figure that out you yourself need to study and understand what AI can do today before you can think about it. Don't focus on the plan, get moving first!
